vr6 noise/rattle???
« on: 02 September 2006, 19:25 »
oh dear.... my ebay bargin has developed a noise today..... i was giving it big licks trying to keep up with some bloke in a 330 coupe bmw who shot off from some lights... besides a bit of boat like handling nearly catching me out at one point i wasnt that far behind him.. went on for about 8 miles, so the engine was gettin some stick (probs not good at 180k on the clock  ) temp ok and every thing else spot on,

but when i pulled up at home to drop some stuff off i noticed a noise on tick over.. only thing i can describe is like either a noisey alternator bearing or water pump bearing, but it isnt coming from the belt side of the engine, its coming from the camchain/gearbox side, dosnt sound like a tensioner/chain prob as it isnt really a rattle as such.. sounds like its higher up dizzy area or just below, its not there all the time only on idle and certain revs....

can anyone help me as to what this noise could be?? where is the water pump on a vr6? cause thats what it sounds like.. unless theres a bearing in the dizzy or sumthing?? or maybe ive just killed it... lol.. still runs a treat and is full power etc just got this noise.......

cheers

i dont think so, there normally a bit lower down, but its a hard noise to describe... will investigate further tomorrow after a night of rain has cooled the old girl down.... sounds like a fooked bearing in a water pump but i dont even know where that is on this engine!! or a bearing in dizzy etc?? oh well... if it is gonna die a death it can atleast do it in style.. lol.. cause i can break the thing for what i paid for it!!

The water pump is on the alternator side of the engine.
Check the upper cam chain tensioner and guide rail, they are well known to cause problems.

The upper tensioner and guide rail can be replaced without removing the gearbox.
The upper guide rail is a bit below the coil, so i suspect thats your problem.

thanks for that mate... il gave it a little run this morning and is wasnt as bad as it was yesterday but its deffo round the area your talkin about...you got a pics of that area with the covers and stuff off?? i can see on the side of the engine a cover (alloy) similar to a cambelt cover, im assuming this is the camchain cover as its gearbox end, just held on with 10mm headed hex bolts, if i remove this tomorrow and any other bits in the way will this enable me to see the tensioner?? hope so as if its an easy fix it diy it.
