Poor idle on mk3 gti 8v
« on: 31 August 2006, 23:30 »
As title... first the ECU was stuck in home limp mode and it wouldnt rev past 5000rpm..

but i had the timing re-done and had the dizzy adjusted, that sorted the prob out and now the car runs spot on..!

but NOW the prob is when the car is stood still... it just wont settle down and idle... the revs go up and down alittle...

Whats the problem lads..?

Cheers!

possible that it is throttle body needs cleaning, but if it happened when you had the first problem and it didnt do it before it could be something else, worth a try though.

when i cleaned my throttle body i took it off the car and cleaned it until it was spotless as any little bits  of dirt will affect it ,and have you made sure that there are no airleaks in the surrounding pipes, cant see that it would be the relays to be honest but like ive done i would change them anyhow as they are only £21 for both ,
hope this helps,carl

Check the idle switch on the throttle body clicks when the throttle is closed :)

When my revs were not settling at junctions or when the car should be idling cleaning the Throttle body sorted it right out.  Took it off the car and cleaned it until spotless with a tooth brush and cloth  :nerd:

Pablo and Carl, the actual throttle body is that where the air pipe connects to..? the squared metal block..?

You couldnt post a pic of the actual part you fully cleaned... as its really doing my head in now , just want it running spot on..!

Cheers!

sorry ive not replyed sooner been away for weekend,
i dont have a 8v anymore my car is a 16v so dont have any pictures im afraid, but like you have said the big airfilter pipe connects to the throttle body and it is held together with 4 allen key bolts just unclip the throttle cable and should come away ,also replace the gasket that is there as they split, and make sure you clean it spotless with carb cleaner or parafin.
