had similar problem on my mk3 gti just after i serviced the car. the car was idling very roughly. cleaned all the breather pipes and throttle body, changed relay no.30 but nothing happened. decided 2 try my old spark plugs again after cleaning them up with wire brush. since then touch wood the car has been running back 2 how it was b4.

So it could be the plugs or my leads? the spark plugs are from VW, its got a set of HT leads on there that dont look like the standard VW ones, i think they been replaced... could this be the prob..?

before i put the old plugs back in, i changed the ht leads, but they never made a difference to my problem. both the plugs and leads i bought from gsf. i also had a diagnostic check done on it and i got 2 faults, the air intake sensor and the engine coolant sensor. i changed both of these as well but again no change. u can try the plugs first as thats the cheaper option before u try the leads.

What plugs did you get?  I find the single electrode ones often end up getting the ends bashed in so throwing out the gapping.  3 elecrode ones dont have this problem though

Ok they should be 3 electrode ones, probably not to do with those then.
Have you checked the idle switch clicks when the throttle is closed, and tested it electrically with a multimeter (does the MK3 GTI have an idle switch??)
