personally i still rave about the JL stuff..... their subs in particular, i had a sony 1200w sub hooked upto a kenwood 400watt amp for a while and it sounded ok, changed the sub for a JL w0 which is rated at 125w and it blew the sony away, the sound quality of them is, IMO, immense.

granted they have gotten a bit too comercial these days, but the subs still rock!!!

I wish manufacturers would only use the RMS wattage figures and not quote some stupid peak at 2 ohms totally unrealistic figures!

If you compare the RMS figures you will get true comparisons between components.

nearly used a JL sub in my new box, but it was too big out back!!!!

^^^^ Very true mate very true!

Because of the size of the box I made (to fit behind the wheelwell of a Mk 3 boot)
it wasnt deep enough to fit a real huge magnet job sub!
But hey the sound is good enough for me and I accepted that it would be a compromise between size and space and remaining boot space when I embarked on that little project!

thats the only down side from making a custom space saving install, u cant usually get the dimensions right to get the most out of the sub.... but as long as it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up all is good.

to wrap my opinion up....

JL sub + 6" component speakers, mated with kenwood headunit (find them very easy to use / tune) and amp

Well there are always compromises to make in life and that was one I decided to make!
Wanted a sub but wanted to keep as much boot space as possible.
And yes I'm more than happy with it! Not only the hairs on neck, I can feel the bass notes in my back!
I use the start of the Chicane CD to check subs! About 35 seconds in a long deep bass note starts and goes on at varying levels for a bout a minute. If a system at high volume produces that well then I class it as good.

I am porting my system over from my vectra i have an american 1200w (550 rms) amp with a fan in it 2 jbl 6 X 9's 2 pioneer 12" subs in a 2.5 cl box with twin ports and a sony head unit, thing is i cant decide if i should keep the standard head unit and try to get a converter to convert my speaker output to rca output so i can keep use of the 6 cd shuttle or is it possible to get an adapter to get the 6 cd shuttle to work with another head unit.............
