16V running lumpy, a few questions..
« on: 17 August 2006, 11:22 »
Hi all,

my newly aquired 16V GTI, is running lumpy . Be it cold or hot.

I am thinking that one possibly culprit could be a vacuum leak and the rubber pipe directly above the AFM has some duct tape around it, I haven't removed the tape yet to investigate but I am thinking that this could be a source of my leak.

What is the best way to check for leaks? I have heard one method is to spray easy start around the vacuum pipes, is this a safe way to do it?

Also, where can i get a new pipe to replace my duct taped one? I tried the GSF web site but couldn't seem to find the part, anyone know what is the official name for it? Is it intake elbow boot?

Anywhere else I can try to purchase it? Is VAG worth a go?

Thanks!

Not sure about easy start, but WD40 will ddo. Just get the engine running and spray away, if you hear a change to the engine note, you've got a leak. Just try VAG, not sure if they still carry them, or try a scrappy.

If your intake hose has a split in it then it will deffo run lumpy and very badly. The whole intake system must be sealed in order for the k-jet mechanical injection system to function. Get yourself a new hose/boot!

Is it the bit that connects to the airbox you need?

Thanks for the replys.

The part that I probably need is the boot that goes directly on the Air Flow Meter- that's the one which has got frayed Duct Tape on it!

Last week my MOT Centre adjusted the Co level to the correct level as she was running lean, if i find the leak will I need to get her readjusted?

Well I checked the intake elbow boot and even though it had duct tape on it it looked pretty secure.

I sprayed WD40 around it and around a few of the pipes but there was no change at all in the engine idle. I didnt wait till the engine was warm though, would that make a difference?

I am thinking next to remove the ISV and clean it with carb cleaner and put some injector cleaner in the tank. Thoughts please.

Cheers guys.
