MOT Failure points need some advice pls :)
« on: 09 July 2006, 17:39 »
Well after a lot of messing about namely three attempts to get an MOT done 2 written off weekends and having my car "stolen" by the garage today, I finally recieved the failure sheet after sitting on a kerb swearing for an hour

So the fail points although not huge...............

Rear n/s & o/s brake pipes excessively corroded (it looks like the copper pipes from the middle to rear of car :( )
Windscreen wiper not parking correctly (Relay possibly??)

Headlamp bulbs adversley affecting beam image. (that'll be my all weather blue bulbs easy fixed I hope)

Both Rear wheel bearings excessive play.

I need to get it sorted before Bugjam and retested so any ideas on these points guys n gurls? ?

Mind you Emissions are the best I've ever seen :D

CO 1.62%     Limit 3.5%
HC 171ppm   Limit 1200ppm

I won't tell you my 20vT got 0.6% on emissions last year then ;) (opps, too late!)

With the brake lines get some emery cloth and smooth off the surface rust. coat them in grease then. that'll pass those.

Not sure on the wiper situ. could be a relay as you say.

rear wheel bearings are easy and cheap enough to do. hammer out the old ones and then hammer in the new shells. make sure you absolutely cake the bearing with grease before fitting else they'll burn out straight away. after 10 miles check for play and give them a bit more of a tighten.

The brake lines have corroded on the bends don't like the look of it,  so I'm going for gold and doing rear brakelines and braided hoses maybe put 256mm discs on whilst I'm there! any ideas on where to get a new set of main copper lines from?? Cheers

you can't put 256mm rear discs on unless you get very custom...

only 4wd golfs had 256's on the back whereas the 2wd ones have 226mm :)

I meant on the fronts lol it's been a long day dude, see the han hijack thread for why!!

Got to put brake pipes on the rear for an MOT which means I may as well do the braided hoses too which means the fronts also so might just go for it and do the front brake conversion too.

You will be able to get the copper brake line and fittings from any old local motor factors.

You probably don't need to replace the rear wheel bearings, try taking out the split pins and winding the nuts just enough to take out the play, then pop new split pins in.....worth a try

Will it be a DIY job or is it a take it to the garage for fixing job? Can't recall where the rears run.
