sounds like the speedo sensor on the back of the speedo has gone, or the wiring to it is shot.  Quite easy to swap another one on there once the clocks are removed, theres a how2 guide in the maintenance + info section.

Had the same problem concerning the mpg, turned out to be the black(?) vacuum sender unit that screws onto the back of the clocks (also check the vacuum pipe isn't cracked / split)

its held on the back of the speedo by 2 screws.  Its about the size of a small pencil sharpener, so if you can find one in your scrappy easily pocketable ;)

theiving oik came for a headlight, told him to take one of a car down the yard, didn't notice how long he took, came back that night thro a hole he'd busted in the fence and helped himself, saw his car 2 days later wearing a lovely set of very familiar wheels, thats how! big pockets is one thin, the git must have bought a wheel barrow. half the stuff that gets nicked is worth very little, and i was no angel in scrappies in my youth(too old to fight alsations these days!),but seeing it from the other side of the fence has made me a bit ratty about it. especially as two weeks ago we had "visitors" who got 2 golfs started and played demolition derby at the front of the workshop, 1 freshly painted Mk3 wants spraying again,Mk2 8V written off, Punto written off by Golf (yeeee-ha!),same with a couple of customers cars. anyhow, rant over, would agree it sounds like the black doo-dah has gone pear-shaped. Oh,rubjonny, any ideas where the weighted shift rod should go if i catch me wheel thief? i was thinking more a drive-shaft.

Now that just aint on!  What a cheaky sod coming back later with wheels blatantly pinched off you
I always make a point of buying summat whenever I go down my local scrappy though they do like to over charge for some things (£10 for the long gear linkage with the plastic ends!  Shame I was desperate and needed it that day :()

Make sure its the Driver side driveshaft
