The upper hose connection in your second picture needs to be blanked off, or simply joinn it to the connection below it with a length of vacuum hose.

the guy at vw breakers told me that nothing connects to that top one, that it isnt a vacume connection at all, just looks like one.....

Im affraid your man is wrong. It connects to the vacume pipe that comes off the back of the top inlet manifold on the back right. It connects to a little yellow round thing. This yellow round thing has a vac pipe coming off it which goes to the airbox and splits via a T and connects to both of your devices. Without it connected im pretty sure you get a poor idle and poor running.

This pic shows the bit im mean. Its part of the main vacum feed for the servo i think. Its circled in red, look close!  :grin: If your still not sure i may have more pics. Just let me know.

right ok, ah ive found a blanked off thing but im stuck now, the only blanked off connection is one off two coming off the bottom of the part coming off the side of the inlet if that makes any sense? is that the one that connects to the top of the airbox or is everything in the wrong place?

 in this work of art you can see my current set up, do i connect the two arrowed things together? is that what you mean? or is it set up wrong at the moment anyway?

When i put a K&N on i was left with a spare vacuum tube, just make sure none of them are open/unsealed. I assume there should be somewhere to plug it in on the standard airbox.... If not just make sure its sealed.  I did similar to 16vGTIPaul but stuck a load of blutac down the tube as a bung then taped over it like that!

If it is sealed and you still have problems then hmmmmm.....

Isn't that mystery metal thing the brake vacuum thingy magjiggy or is that something else?
