Is Pioneer a dirty word?
« on: 22 June 2006, 23:27 »
First off I'd like to say thanks to all the clued up contributors to this forum - I had got hold of some Infinity 6x9s, with magnets big enough to pick up the spare wheel - but after reading a few threads here - they're up for sale!!

My question is this - does anybody have an opinion on current pioneer products - I'm thinking really of speakers at the moment.

After speaking to my local ice installer, he recommended a pair of ts-e 136c components - not too surprising as they are pioneer stockists, but I do know him from being in the motor trade, and I do know that he's no idiot.  I declined at the time - which was lucky as I've since found them £30 cheaper!

If other brands are preferable (and god knows there are enough out there!) then which ones?

The current alpine range are very good speakers for the money. even as far down at the Type E line up they are good value. If I was you I would get a set of Type S speakers though.

As for pioneer I would only use 1 of their products... the DEH-77MP ;)

Thanks - I'll take a look at the alpine range.

Sometimes difficult to tell the difference between the good, the bad and the indifferent.  Must admit, I did like the look of those yellow kevlar cones on the pioneers!

There doesn't appear to much in the way of independent reviews of speakers on the 'net, but plenty if you want a hoover or DVD player.

I have my amp, and have ordered the door pocket grills - just need to decide on the comps and pick up some sound deadening!

Thanks again for the advice.

Sound deadening makes a huge differance. Its often forgoten about and folk will spend soooo much money on there speakers. Dynamatt is expensive but worth every penny if you have some decent front speakers.
On the note of Pioneeer they are ok if you want sharp music, like old rave music. There clarity is nothing on Alpine, Infinity or Focals. I have found Infinity give a nice smooth sound although have been a bit sharp on some notes. Alpines are good all rounders providing no sharp notes and a good mid/bass for a 13cm door speaker. Focal imo are the best. Great sound quality even running off the head unit.
When you get your standard door speaker pods mate be sure to Dynamatt inside them, remember they are thin plastic that moves a fair bit...Dynamatt sorts that out for £18 a roll. You will only use half of that roll on the standard door pods so house the rest on the inside of your doors, will mean taking door cars off and having a good clean around before applying the Dyno' but will be worth it.

I've got Pioneer Home & car Audio

my home amp is about 20 years old and still kicks most new amps butt - I've been looking for a replacement for years but nothing sub £400 comes up to scratch

Home Speakers 8" 3 way - about 10 years old, used for mixing D&B for god knows how many hours at ear bleeding volume and still going strong - I used to blow speakers like it was a hobby before I got them, I don't even bother with a sub anymore

Car Speakers - 8" 3 way - almost as good sound & volume as the home speakers and yet to blow even when connected to my "Sub-killer" amp

Headunit 6800 radio/cassete - not so great, the ribbon cable connecting the face to the main unit has broken twice  I've fixed it now but can't be rr'sed to re-fit it - I want one of them DEH-77MP's like dizzy said, that thing was made for Mk1's
