Changing a Sump-Gasket...how difficult?

Theres a metal cover plate on the back of the gearbox which you can remove, this helps access to the bolts between the engine & gearbox (read, you cant get to em otherwise!) Even then a wobble joint is very handy here!

Buy yourself some new bolts from VW think it costs about £3 and it stops the leaking after replacing as the bolts rot and let oil trickle through. Use a thin long extension and a 1/4" drive socket to remove.

Make sure you torque em up when you put it back on.   If memory serves, they are only about 20nm I think, but check it first!     It is very easy to over tighten them if you try & pikey it

Gonna change my sump gasket, is there anything else i can check/clean while the sumps off?

the oil pump. or better still replace it. I replaced the big end bearings on saturday and put a new sump gasket in at the same time in about 2 hours.

the gauze on the oil pickup will get clogged over time and if it gets really bad the pump can fail starving your engine of oil... not good.

there are 2 nuts. 10mm ones. I had to use a 1/4 drive socket to do the ones closest to the gearbox. good old 3/8 drive did the rest.

i changed my gasket once and the 2 bolts near to the box are a right pain in the a$$ and i was soooo close to threading them but luckily i didnt, the gasket still leaked after that which was quite frustrating!!!. so there can be probs mate when taking the sump off be warned

but thats because you're a chump and used the wrong gasket!! who cares anyway right? got a new toy to play with now!

there is a 5-1 odds that i will screw this up somehow....saying that my paint work turned out quite nicely!!!

had a few people comment on how it has turned out better than they thought!

For your information joe it was the right gasket  it was just a rather lame one from GSF which was wafer thin. Damn straight i have a new toy to play with no skimping on crappy GSF gaskets with this car thats for sure!
