Suspension Top Mounts...
« on: 12 June 2006, 12:24 »
I've received my new coilovers - FK Highsports - for the VR6, but a buddy of mine said it would be a decent idea to replace the suspension top mounts too.   I guess a couple of rubber cups can't cost that much, so I may as well.

Anyway, I can't seem to figure out exactly which parts I'm after.. :embarassed:  Since most of the parts sites don't bother providing pictures, or even particularly good descriptions.  gsfcarparts.com lists a "STRUT TOP MOUNTING KIT" (part no:  45737K, link:https://secure.gsfcarparts.com/shop/results.asp [but I guess the link might fail since it's https]) for a VR6 (well, for all golfs of that age - mine's a 95 - but I wouldn't expect this component to change between models anyhoo) which I assume is the right one, but I don't know if that's all four of them, or just the front, or what.  I'll send them an email but I suspect I'll get a quicker response here!

So:
Is this what I want?  If not, any suggestions?
Do I really need to bother replacing them, or is that just overkill?

I'll be trying to get them done at the weekend, with the help of some mates who've done this before.

[EDIT] Oh, it's a Mk3 VR6 - forgot to mention..[/EDIT]

As for the part details i dont really know. Your best ringing them really, they are very helpfull.

It is a good idea to renew them now as they do tend to fail now and then. The only other thing i can say is that you will need a strut top tool to disasemble your old shocker and install the mounts on your new coil overs.

Thanks.  My shocks are in (pardon the pun) a shocking state at the mo IMO (ride quality isn't good at all - certainly not what you'd expect from a once range-topping model).  As for the tool, like I say I've got some buddies who've done it before - I believe they used a very 'deep' ring spanner and a hex key, but whatever it was worked, so I'm sorted there.

I'll give GSF a ring and see then.  Thanks for the response!

Get genuine ones, on a mk1 they're about £2 more than the copies and they last a hell of a lot longer - they're quite an important part so its not worth trying to save where safety is concerened - plus you're going to want to get the most out of those fancy new coil-overs

Do you know of any good sites that sell genuine VAG bits then?  vagparts.co.uk don't seem to have a lot for Mk3s... (Although I've not tried emailing them yet)

I'm happy to spend a little extra, but if VW ones are £60 and a cheaper set are £15, then I'd have to compromise a bit there - I've just spent all that money on the coilovers themselves, and will still have to pay to get tracking/camber/etc sorted out after fitting....

I could pop into the VW dealership and see how much they want   whatcha reckon?  £20 a pop?

I'd go to a dealer myself, sure they're a little bit more expensive to start with but if you add the cost of replacing the cheap ones as they'll wear out long before the genuine then add labour the genuine start looking much cheaper

Ah well.  Yet more money to mister MasterCard I guess.

I knew it was a bad idea to buy a car worth spending money on.... I really should know myself better by now

At least it's cheap to run...  So far after a 1/4 tank I'm on 26MPG...

  Love it really.
