Oil light and buzzer question
« on: 02 June 2006, 10:40 »
Hi, i am new here, I have just bought a mk2 GTI 8v 90. had the oil light keep coming on and off and then the buzzer with the oil light this is intermittent and i have changed the oil switch in the head and the one near the filter.
Can someone tell me what else it could be? is there anyother oil switchs?
Thanks

not taking the piss but is the oil topped up?

if so it could be the oil pick up in the sump is gummed up restricting flow to the top of the engine causing the buzzer to go off.

no there arent any other switches. the one in the head is a 0.3bar switch (make sure u replaced it with the right one, it is written on it) and the one in the filter mount is a 5bar switch

if it is none of those then it sould be the buzzer etc itself are shagged i would suggest

1. check the switches are correct
if so
flush the engine with engine flush and change the oil and filter

if that doesnt work then drop the sump and check the pick up isnt gummed, save the oil from above for reuse tho!

The buzzer is for low pressure so the logical thing is too check/change the pressure switches which youve done. Maybe give the car a service e.g new oil filter and fresh oil- might be a dirty filter?
Apologies if youve done all this
The mk2 does suffer from oil surge in the sump- does it buzz when you are corning hard or just in general driving? It may be your oil pump, whats the mileage of the car? I never really figured an oil pump would wear out but mine was knackered- they are about £40 from gsf.

if it is the surge thing u can get a plastic baffle from vw, mine came with one, but i think they are available. and yeah it could be the oil pump but check the other things first cos they are cheap were as an oil pump is still forty quid lol

nice one guys. i will try the oil change first as it has been a year since the oil was changed.
as for the oil light and buzzer it comes on genrally when i am driving under 40mph as on the motorway it hasn't come on .

asked a vw specialist and he said that you need a oil pressure check carried out with a guage.
he also said if the pressures ok then its the pcb board behind the dash.

Change your oil and filter first for genuine vw stuff.

noticed today when driving the car that the buzzer and oil light come on when i am going about 30-40mph and around the 2000rpm mark. tryed to get an oil change done but it seems all garages are busy, might change it myself later on. doesnt stay on all the time..

sounds like the pump to me have you replaced the plastic dip stick holder or guide what ever the bloody things called!lol
i say this cos when they start to go britle and break bits fall off and get stuck on the gauze and restrict the flow.as at low revs the pyump isnt sucking as hard.this happend to my jetta.whilst tring to work out what it was it was too late it went bang when i changed the engine i checked it and that was the case.i might be a million miles away but you wont know unless you check?
