Refurbishing Alloy Wheels
« on: 29 May 2006, 17:12 »
Hi,

Can anyone give me an idea how much it would costs to get some BBS split rims refurbished. They're the 16" MK4 ones.

Thanks.

depends if you split them down yourself ,and what finish you require (painted, polished ,powder coated ?)
are they curbed / bent ?,

Thanks for the replies - atleast it gives me some idea.

I think I'll sick with the diamond cut rim & standard finish for the centre.

They're not curbed - just the usual problem with water under the laquer on the rim.

Get your rims re-cut, but dont have them re-lacquered! Its much better to keep on top of them with autosolve every couple of weeks! in bad weather give them a shot of WD40, to  stop them oxidising, in the winter a light coat of vaseline works wonders :smug:

Do u mean just send the outer rim away? Guess that would be cheaper! Will ask around for a few quotes!

If your wheel centre's are OK.. just have your outer rims done! to polish properly they have to come apart anyway, paint stripper the lacquer off, and carefully sand out any corrosion, using increasingly finer grades of wet/dry, then finish with autosolve... its all about elbow grease! thats if your keen
Or, get them split down, and take the rims to a local metal polisher (generally, people that do electro plating) you could save yourself a fortune! thats if you want a chrome look! if you want diamond cut, then you really have to go down the specialist route. expect to pay £40-60 +vat per rim, anything less is a bonus! These are just a couple of options available,
Tom
