I've looked quite a bit into plates as i've got a black/silver one on the front

here's what i've found out:-
Vehicle construction & use guidelines state that plates should be yellow on the back white on the front for all cars after 1975 (or somewhere around then) & pre-1975 cars can use the black/silver plates.
however...
MOT guidelines only cover size & location of the plates & letter size - colour doesn't come into it (I've passed with my black/silver plate

)
but...
As far as the fuzz are concerned if your plate isn't legal you haven't got plates and they can do you for that , if they try it
you want a deffered test this means they have to arrange a suitable time (within 2 weeks) to re-check the car (giving you time to ditch the plates

) although i've been pulled a few times (even by traffic) and they've never been an issue

I stuck my black/silver plate over my "proper" plate with mirror pads - if it comes to it i'll pull my nice plate off leaving the boring one and the pigs can go f**k
