gearbox oil
« on: 06 December 2003, 11:46 »

Just popped down to Euro Car Parts to get some gearbox oil and spoke to a Joker who told me I needed 4 litres which seemed about right. Then he said they only sell it in 0.5 litres bottles and I need 8 obviously. All seemed fine until he said they are ?6 odd plus v.a.t. Is this chimp winding me up or what ???

Any idea how much it should cost me ? Is there anywhere I can simply buy 2 lires rather than 0.5 ?

Thx all, today I bought 2 litres of Castrol EP80 w 90 for about ?12. Will be changing it tomorrow weather being ok. Is it a difficult job or just similar to engine oil changing ? Anything I need to bear in mind/need ?

You will need a 17mm hexagon socket. Drain plug is by the diff. Filler plug is at the end of the box behind the front left wheel.
Drain oil, refill until oil seeps out of filler plug hole.

Thx to you as always VR, how do I actually get the oil into the box as it obviously does not have a filler like the top of the engine ? :)

With a funnel. Ideally you want a washing machine hose, cut the ends off it, you can get in anywhere with that. You can buy these hoses for about a fiver from most electrical stores.
Also be careful when doing up the drain and filler plug. You can see how far the plugs are supposed to go in as the thread that doesn't go in will be dirty. If in doubt use a torque wrench.

Had  look today and was gonna do the drain it etc, but I am fcuked if I can see the top up bolt/thingy. I think I found the drain plug but not sure. It was  17mm hex bolt, should this be the only there ?
