Just checked my service book and the results are as follows:

60,000 and then every 10,000 - the camshaft belt and tensioner are checked - 4 cyl petrol
60,000 the cambelt and tensioner are replaced - tdi only (exept sharan)
80,000 - the cambelt is replaced - only transporter diesel
100,000 - the cambelt is replaced - 4 cyl diesel engines only
120,000 - the cambelt is changed - 4 cyl, 5 valve petrol engines only

You've read the Service schedule - fair enough.  You should remind folks here that the figures you gave were for kilometers - NOT miles.

Lisa - said mileage ok  -  100 kilometers = 62 miles  therefore use 5/8 or multiply by 0.62 to give approx mileage.

Sharan diesel cambelt replaced at 60,000 km or before 40k miles. Petrol units are Checked  (60,000 kilometers = 37,200 Miles)

I asked the technicians for their opinion on the turbo engines. If you check the wear of the cambelt at 40,000 or 60,000 miles, then the work and labour involved to check it, means that you replace it, it is more economical to replace once there and on the job, than to keep checking.

As I said before, if you acquire a turbo at 4 or 5 years a Golf mkIV , and you don't know the previous owner's driving style, why take the risk.

You said / and the book is miss translated here.
120,000 - the cambelt is changed - 4 cyl, 5 valve petrol engines only

That means at 75,000 miles. Also the german translation is very poor. It may have said in German 4 cyl by 5 valves per cylinder units (ie the 20 valve turbo).  I don't know ?

I talked to actual VW workshop people and the technician who runs his own business doing:  Porsche's, BMW's, Audi's, and TVR's.

If you don't have full VW service history for every singe thing done, then you can't fall back on what is written in the Service Manual, when something goes wrong, and you are out of Warranty !

I'd rather recommend with caution - That is all.

That is in miles mate(roughly translated)  :undecided:

But whatever, just get your cambelt done before it snaps, or else like duncan says youi will be in a world of pain  and skint.  Mine is on warranty so I'm ok

Oh yeah and the 120000miles is the maximum, if it has'nt already been done

  • had most, sold most and often buy more!
had my cambelt changed when i bought the mk4 golf gti in may 2003, the tw@ts never checked changed the tensioner/rollers etc... hence my engine bang up in may 2004... very costly... unless you have witnessed the bad bits removed be it by vw or who ever just make sure theyve been done... other wise its bloody costly!!

from experience....
