Lets just drag it back from the saucy comments for a minute.
If vw say to change it at 120k and you get it serviced regularly and then it goes surely vw should pay to sort it out. Why keep advising you not to change it till 120k when every thread you read on forums and all the independent experts like Jabbasport recommend changing it before then.

They don't say to get it changed at 120k, they recommend this as the latest you get it done.  It does say in the service book that you shoul have it checked every 10k from 60k I believe

Right,

I checked last week. For drivers who use their right foot.

1st change on cambelt for the 180 turbo is any time on 40K, Same advice also for the AUM 150 unit,  and certainly before 50K. Next change before 60K. By the time you get to 100k you must have had three new cambelts, or going for the third straight away.

If you drive routinely, then a 10% longer interval on the 1st change, next change though, before 100k. Don't take totally unecessary risks with your turbo unit. If the belt splits or comes off - your looking at a rebuild from the block up, and it may never run quite so sweetly.

Are you sure ? 120k before doing the cambelt - No Way

I will check that book again, last time I looked at it, it was generally useless for the turbo cars, the AUM and AUQ engines.  That book is a generic book for all cars, designed to be understood by people who don't probably know where to the put oil in.  I found it pretty damn useless on technical issues, but fine on using the car.

I spoke to people who have been in the VW trade since the birth of the Golf. They say that the turbos get a real hammering in the Ist 40k miles, (New Owners bought the MKIV  turbo for a power reason) that is why the 2nd change interval is 60k miles on from the Ist, namely by 100k. Reason, they have studdied warranty issues and find that the car will have changed ownership by 65k and the 2nd owners are quite NOT quite so heavy on the throttle.

Call your Dealer, ask for the workshop manager, I'd be interested to hear what he says.

Amazingly mine went at 32k a month or so after I got the car (1.6 2001)

Had a warranty with the car when i got it and they was an abosl*te thingy to deal with.

cost £240 to have fixed.

The garage that fixed it said they rarely go at this mileage. No idea what makes them go?

But all is well with the car now everything working as it should.

Soulman - On the 1600 unit that is unusual. Maybe the previous owner just whipped the throttle the whole time from new. You do get some bloody idiots in nice Golfs.

Martyn - For the 20 valve turbo, that is essential at 58K you weren't the Ist owner, Right ! Wise decision - get it done, then drive with confidence.

Driving Golfs is not a cheap business, if ya want cheap motoring drive a Citroen C2 1.4 diesel, then throw away at 7 years.
