You need a third option - turbocharge a 4mo.  This is far and away the best option.

definetly go with super/turbocharging the 2.8, also much better sound from a v engine. Have you seen the HPA or HGP stuff as they turbo the r32

You realise a 4mo as standard has pretty much the same power as your 1.8T already ? the 2.8 V6 pulls differently.. more suited to the 4wd. You'd have to go 1.8T transplant AND big turbo to make it worthwhile. Either way you need 2 donor vehicles, not cheap.

There are companies who carry our 4wd conversions on 2wd mk4's. I think they were asking about 6 grand to do this last time i checked, not cheap.

Mr. Henry hit the nail on the head, supe up the V6 if you must. It can be a monster of an engine, supercharged or turbocharged. Would almost certainly be the cheapest option.

Why are you asking though ? Just curious or are you thinking of doing it ? 232 lbft through the front wheels shouldn't be a problem at all mate. If you're having trouble getting the power down look into getting a limited slip diff (LSD). Cheaper than the above 3 options and will do you just fine all the way upto, and beyond 300 lbft (the TDI boys are touching that with just a remap already)

I must confess, was more curious than anything.  Just thinking of the future! :lol 232lb will do me for now!

I only have to feather the throttle in the wet, which isn't really a drama though, TBH.

Only slight concern, would be that great big lump hanging over the front wheels.  Don't the 4M's understeer too easily?

nahhh not with proper suspension.. and especially not when they're 4wd power oversteer is fun !

Yeah, I used to have a lot of tail out fun in my old MGF Trophy 160  :embarassed:.  I Didn't have a clue what was happening through the front wheels, mind, thanks to a lack of communication through the steering wheel.

Anyway, I think for now, I'm just gonna stick with the 2.5" downpipe/sports cat & cat back.  I've got my Milltek (silenced) centre section, Am just waiting for a 4M style backbox to turn up somewhere!  (Or I could go down the blueflame route for £525 all in??? - Don't want anything too noisy, though.)
