What mk1 is it ? GTI ? If it's an injection mk1 then the prob could be your fuel relay.  :undecided: I've had the same problem on mine a few times where it starts but after it's run for a bit I've stopped and it wouldn't start so I sandpapered the connections  on the relay and then it fires up ok. Does it start up ok after a delay in trying for say 10 or so minutes ?

its the mk1 1.8 valve gti it normally starts if you keep the key turning till the battery runs near flat pain in the arse as when you put jump leads on it starts after a bit i'll have a look at the fuel relay cheers pal

This is how I know mine had the problem as when you turn the ignition on I can hear the fuel pump prime (back wheel, drivers side), if the relay is the problem then you will not hear the pump prime and so it will not start. This is not a hard and fast rule as I've also read that not everyone can hear their fuel pump prime. This is a good site for some help too, it's mainly for the cab but it may assist you --> http://dana.ucc.nau.edu/~kaw5/electrical.htm

If it's not that then I'm not sure buddy.

I remember reading in Golf+ mag last month someone asked 'The Brain' the very same question - I'll get the reply for you later tonight...

The Brain is C&R Enterprises - link is on this sites main page  http://golfgti.co.uk

Link to the Brain questions and answers are also at The Golf+ mag website - http://www.thegolf.co.uk/content/ask_brain.htm - looks like they have uploaded this months questions and answers, thus not showing the answer.

Could be cold start valve leaking?

Check out MK1 owners club www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk

People are posting all the time with the same problem so you'll probably find the answer there!

Cheers
Andy

...or the ignition timing and/or dodgy vacuum pipes?

Mine was pretty bad as well but once I cleaned up all the starter motor and electrical connections and had the timing sorted, it's as good as new and starts first time, every time.

check the fuel relay, but also the cold start sensor, check its working properly is it runnin ok fuel wise getting decent mpg, some times keep the  cold injector open and over fuel when trying warm starting.
