Must admit, the first time I heard it, which was not long after the car was new, I nearly **** myself

I have a 1.8T Mk 4 with 60,000 on the clock
It had the diesely rattle at start up - worse after being left for a while

My local dealer (Lindvale Southend) diagnosed it as being the cam chain
tensioner not retaining oil pressure.
They changed it under warranty ( I just sneaked in on the time and
mileage limits).
Now it is much better and seems to run a lot smoother too although
that might be the BP Ultimate gas. Third tank full -expensive but good.

I know its nowt serious!  its just that ive been driving an oil burner 306 for the last 5 years, and ive finally got my hands on a nice quiet petrol, but everytime i start it up it sounds like my old car!

But i'll put up with it coz i love it!!!

Well mine is 2 days old and I also note a slight rattle (diesel like) on first start. It's a petrol 1.6.

I also have a stranging ticking on the left hand side as you look under the bonet at low idle  

I guess who cares, it's under warranty!
