why do i still get rubbish MPG?
« on: 10 April 2006, 19:21 »
i got a 1600 driver.

i have put on:
-newly refurbed carb (2e2)
-new rotor arm
-new plugs
-new fuel filter
-new air filter
-drilled air box
-new 'o' ring in the inlt mani (wasn't blocked anyway)
-new dizzy cap

the car pulls very well, and drives great, but when it stands after a run, it stinks of petrol. dont smell it inside when driving though. it take ages to catch when warm starting -it just turns over and over. there are no obvious leaks, no pools of petrol underneath.

i got about 80 miles from 20 quid of juice. that aint right is it?

someone suggested the fuel accumulator, but i dont know.

what do you guys think?

Thats very poor MPG. I'd expect around twice that with mine (depending on what type of journey). Is the carb set up properly? You might be running rich?

like i said mate, there is no drips on the floor, nor puddles when parked upafter a run.

what do you mean the breather may have come off?

could it be the fuel reservior/accumulator thingy? it smells of petrol at the fron rather than the back.

Forget about the ecotec mate. 1st you need to get your overfueling sorted.

The ecotect is a daft little gizmo that claims to give better fuel economy. But if theres a problem then that needs fixing before you guy splashing cash on a ecotec valve.

Do people still use those ecotek things? My god...

Take them off your cars for the love of god.

We had this problem with our Mk1 GTi, it may be that a breather pipe from the petrol tank is/has been disconnected or come loose.

You could try running some STP cleaner (Halfords) through your petrol tank...although I'm not sure that would make much difference.

Personally, I'd advise taking it to a VW specialist or a good garage that you know of.
