So have you replaced your mk3 2.0 8v for the origional 1.8 8v engine? K-jet is the mechanical injection and has the braided wires on the air box. Digi the electronic type and has an electrical sensor on the intake hose. If its turning over really quick its usually a snapped timing belt or even worse, internal damage. Whats the history of the engine? Whats it from? Was it running before?

The timing could be 180deg out, you would still get the spark near to TDC but it would be on the exhaust stroke rather than the compression stroke. The piston would still be at the top of the cylinder but the valves would be open rather than closed - this is a very common error.

Well this is how I would check:
Follow the No 1 cylinder plug lead back to the dizzy cap and make a note of which one it is.
Take the no 1 spark plug out (you could take them all out to make the engine easier to turn over) and turn the engine over by hand and watch for the No1 piston to come up to its highest point.
Take the oil filler cap off and I guess you should be able to see the No1 cylinder exhaust cam, if it is pointing down then your on the tdc exhaust stroke so turn the engine over by hand again 360 deg until the piston comes up to the top again and the cam is not pointing down. The piston is now tdc on the compression stroke.
Now take the dizzy cap off and see in which direction the rotor arm is pointing, if its not pointing in the direction of where the No 1 lead was and pointing in the opposite direction then the dizzy is 180deg out.   I expect someone may have a quicker way to do it??
