Supercharging Digi 8V
« on: 27 November 2003, 12:20 »
I've not heard anyone discussing the supercharging of a stock 8v?

Surely seeing as the G60 was very similar, less the charger to a stock digi someone must have made a kit or something ?

Anyone shed any light on this? Or is it just easier to get a donor engine ???

Hi

Im not an engine expert but I think the compression ration will be wrong just to stick a supercharger on there. The g60 engine is an 8 valve any way (apart form the limited) so if your engine is in good shapes it could be a good starting point for you. Im sure if you hang on someone who knows what there talking about will help you more than I can.

You're right the G60 runs at a different compression ratio to the stock 8v.

I think personally it would not be worth it - as G60's are fairly common place and it would save you a lot of hassle to retro fit from another vehicle.

If you were to do it yourself - you may need to swap pistons - change the loom not forgetting finding a charger and a charge cooler.

I'm sure VR6 can think of other considerations - but the extra work you would make yourself could be avoided if you just simply bought a g60 engine (with it's asscociated ancillaries)

But if you're considering an engine swap - don't forget the 20v T engine.

I agree with Slim , just buy a G60 engine and dump it straight in. You might need to stiffen the suspension and uprate the brakes a bit, not essential but advisable.

Cheers for the input guys - all the chassis and running gear has been uprated or is in pucker condition - with a mint PB engined 8V on 70k I though it might be a better starting platform than an engine I know nothing about !!

Also, i was hoping to save a few pennies as my last engine went pop after about 2k being spent on it!! OK, it was a Ford CVH but still an expensive bit of fun!

I love the idea of a 'blown' VR6 - the states have some mad kits for those engines - guess it's time to sod saving for a deposit on the house and tell the misses there's more pressin issues !!  ;D

Would it not be easier to tune up the 8v, maybe a 1.9 or 2.0L conversion?

Yeah maybe, but unless I can get a 'cross flow' head and use Weber's etc then anything below 2000cc isn't a good pound / BHP spend!

Even then my friends 2000cc National Hot Rod only gets up to 300bhp and that's far from practicle on the road ( or legal !! ) and in fill race trim.

I think this is a classic case of my eye's and right foot are  a million times bigger than my wallet  :'(
