I guess by Crossflow your refering to a 16v?
Coz you're gonna have a hard job finding an 8v with a crossflowed head - coz VW didn't make one.
a 2l bottom end matched with a good head & cam combination will surprise you my friend.
btw
ford engines go pop because they were built f?cked.
Next time you're at the lights and you hear excessive tappet noise - odds on it's a five yr old Ford.

2L will be the way I go with my 8v, I'll either source a decent block or go for a rebore and new crank. I reckon 140bhp will be very attainable and would make for a quick road car, while maintaining all the reliability of the standard 8v engine?.
