if you push the stick forward in neutral it should go into 3rd, if its going into 5th then you need to adjust your linkage, see the mk2 maintenance + info section at the top of this forum

sorry for the hijack....
but sometimes (ok, when I'm driving a bit quick..), when i change to 2nd gear, the gearstick sometimes twists rather than go straight into gear...

does it happen when cornering? If so replace the gearbox mount with a 1.3 bonded rubber one. Also lift the stick upwards, if it moves at all then you need to replace the housing under the car
