Bottom right hand side 8v. Do you reckon that the kind of car I should be looking for - though not red [my 1.6 Driver was red, I want a different colour] and a 16v? Does the description look good to you?

That red one looks like a beauty :)
The ammount you spend depends how much work you are willing to do yourself, I spent £375 on a shed of an 8v with a massive list of faults, and I've gradually fixed it up :)  If you spend £3k+ you should expect to have pretty much nothing wrong with it, or some rare factory options as even with mint bodywork and low milage this is quite alot of money to spend on a MK2!

One thing to add, PAS was always an option right from the beggining of MK2 production, and was never fitted as standard, except on some limited/special editions, run out models etc.

A few other options were electric windows, electric heated mirrors, headlight washers, electric headlight range adjustment amongst other things.  You could also get a cool Votex centre console, which is especially sought after!

If it helps, I paid £1400 for an '88 16v GTI a few months ago.  124k on the clock, fsh, bodywork great bar 2 small rust patches.

As a guide that I used... around 100k in good nick will be between £1200 and £2000.  Above that you I would hope for something special or something thats had aftermarket mods.

The Red one looks a belter to me!

I paid £2800 for a J plate 8 valve with 57k on the clock & a full VW service history

Garaged & only used 3 months a year  It was a bargain its like stepping back in time!
