Mk2 info?
« on: 03 April 2006, 15:28 »
Hello guys n girls!

If any answers to my questions are else where, please do direct me that way

I reckon I'm gonna be in the market for a Mk2 GTi quite soon, but was wondering if I could get some general info on them:
- Like the differences between a 16v and 8v [sorry if that been covered many times], in terms of performance, driving etc.

- What kind of dosh should I been looking at spending for a mint low mile example, and are they easy to find [I love the oak green and it would have to be a 3 door and 99% standard]?

- Some info on spec over the years of production would be great. Was leather ever an option or aircon?

- Has anyone had any dealings with futureclassiccars.com or Volks Cars in Stafford? Know any other good specialists?

At the moment I got a 1989 BMW E30 325i Motorsport cab [which I will be selling if anyone interested?] but I need to free up some dosh for a house I'm gonna be buying soon and I've always wanted a Mk2 GTi - I had a 1.6 Driver with the big bumper kit as my 1st car when I was 18 and I loved it. In between the Golf Driver and Beemer I had a 1.8T New Beetle, which I had remapped by Jabba to 225bhp - wicked car, how would the performance of the lighter MK2 measure-up?

Cheers for any help.

Hi & welcome

If you don't mind working for your thrills then the 16v is definately much more fun to drive, you need to keep the revs above 4500rpm though to reap the benefits of the extra breathing. This requires a lot more gear changing. The 8v is a much smoother less frantic drive, but is still great fun.

Pricewise expect to spend from £1000 for a very tidy example to in excess of £3000 if you want an exceptional low mileage 16v. Unmolested examples are out there if you've got the patience (it took 18 months in my case).

These sites are worth a look:

Reckon I'm at the higher end of your price scale there, so I should be looking at a mint example yeah?

Cheers bud, some nice links there. There's a black 16v [which is sold dam it] on the golfgalore site, which would of been perfect!!!

hello and welcome first of all!

as tobz said 16valves and 8 valves have the pro's and cons, I have a 16v which i love, as I lvoe to rev the b*ll*cks off, I have never driven an 8v so would be able to comment myself. BHP wise the 8 valves had 112 and the 16valves had 139.

Spec wise:

things like leather and air con were optional extras which are a rarity to be honest. Power steering came on the later models from around 88 on wards (I used to have an 87 E reg valver which didnt have power steering so 88 onwards I am guessing) and most GTi's came with electric windows.

p.s good luck with the golf search

I would keep looking round the forums.  There's always a few good examples about but you do have to be patient.  I was looking for about 9 - 10 months for my 16v.  The corrado-forum is usually a good bet (www.corrado-forum.net I think)  I'll have a look later tonight and see if I can look out any others.

Happy hunting.

Ya, I know futureclassiccars, I bought a car off him. Really good bloke and I love the Mk1 Golf I bought off him, someone else off here must do too - AS THEY'VE GOT MY BLOODY CAR IN THEIR SIGNITURE!!!!!!!

Anyway, for a mint low mileage example be prepared to spend £2800+. £2500 as a bare minimum.

I prefer the 8v with its point and shoot style of driving, you don't have to rag the sh!t out of it to get performance...also my car (8v) is producing more power than a 16v.  "Thats the way to do it!"

Make sure you do something with the suspension, nothing too crazy in terms of lowering, but the standard stuff can be a big wobbley. Avoid all raped 'eBay' style wannabe's at all cost.

Check rear brake calipers - they can stick, check rust...you should be ok at that price and they won't have any.

Oak green is a good colour, not exactly 'rare', but a good colour nonetheless.

Cheers for all your help guys.

GolfsGalore changed their website design overnight? Anyway I noticed this 16v yesterday http://www.golfsgalore.com/cars/mk2/0106-hnv/index.htm [and now its sold ], which if it went for the advertised price was £3795. Would you class 116,000 miles as low cos you guys been saying under 3k for a low mile minter?

I did see that one Ross. 5 door though, its gotta be a 3 door, I aint got kids yet

Blimey that's a coincidence, the golfsgalore site has been the same for years and was very rarely updated when I used to check it on a daily basis.
Most people are looking for an example with under 100k on the clock, however 116k is still low for a 15 year old car. Prices are becoming extremely tough to gauge these days as a good valver is worth what somebody is willing to pay.
£3795 might not have been too much for that motor if the bodywork was extremely mint to compensate for the mileage, it might of course been haggled down a bit.
As a guide I paid £3295 for the car in my sig 18months ago with 94k on the clock.

Yeah I know what you mean regarding prices being what someone is willing to pay - I paid £8.5k for my 17 year old E30 only 6 months ago [which is why I'm now selling it, as I need the dosh for a house], but it has even now only got 55.5k miles which is stupid low! Here is a pic:
