Fitting new steering wheel - help needed quickly
« on: 23 March 2006, 13:50 »
hey

bought a steering wheel and boss for my 1.8 Driver today.

On the top of the boss lid it syas remove spliced bush.

I'm taking it that this is the bit where the wheels interlocks into the mechanism.

How the **** do you get that off..i've been trying for half hour!

the boss will not fit on otherwise and the guy at the shop[ said watch out with this.

Any ideas people?

Cheers
Tim

you cant get the metalic bit off the top of the steering column, thats kinda important. if the boss wont fit its the wrong one

this happened to me,  the company that suplied it put the wrong part number in the wrong box.

hope this helps :undecided:

thats the best mk3 ive seen..ever! its just clean and subtle..

It says on the box to remove it...also i think that's held on in the same way so would therefore leave another spliced bit (but smaller) for the wheel to slot on.

Yes you can get the bush off, but you need a decent gear puller, time, patience and a cool temper.  In the end I clamped a pair of pliers round it butted up to the lip to give the pueer something to grab on to!  Best to increase the pressure gradually as well, and it should pop off after several slips :)

Easiest way is to swap the boss for one suitable for a late MK2 or MK3, and give your old Boss to a MK1 owner ;)

right..does the sliced ring come ff or the shaft bit behind it aswell? (about 1cm long..)

Edit: don't think we have one of those tools and i cant go and buy one as ive damaged the thread for the old steering wheel to go onto.
