stainless exhaust, weber carb and a 8v gti cam will give you a bit more driveability and horsies more than that is big dollar. using ebay and scrappies you could prob do that for under 500 bar. the weber will be the biggest outlay.

Usuals are K&N filter panel, GTI camshaft, GTI exhaust, sort out the carb (replace with webber if your that way inclined). I've done the first and the car feels more responsive. Can't tell you about any power increase tho, never RR'ed. If anyone has any idea what sort of increase if any I'm looking at thatd be nice

i got a driver with the following mods.

8v gti cam...Straight bolt in...cheap to buy...always a few for sale check ebay
32/34 weber carb...Straight bolt on...i bought a brand new one...pretty expensive but worth it!
Straight through to twin exit peco back box.

the verdict?
feels like the 8v driver is know a 16v driver, feels more rev happy and pulls through the gears with ease and great midrange and pickup. Defiently worth investing in them mods. going to get a 8v gti manifold and downpipe next.

dont bother with the bottom end then, but the rest is in the haynes manula and if you take your time, get a mate to help and get all your tools ready you could do this in a weekend easy peasy, cam and carb one day exhaust the next.

change the cam belt while your at it cos its silly fitting the old one again when you have to take it off anyway! change the tensioner aswell.....
