Will my Mk.3 8v Gti look crap on 17's? Anyone got a pic of stock ht Gti on 17's?

I've got a totally standard 5 door M registered Gti in dragon green, which I love *BUT* its stock wheels (the multispoke jobbies) are badly corroder and appear to have some bad splash pattern staining (as if acids been on them) and relly let the look of the car down. My bro has a set of 17" 5 spoke wheels, nice & plain, with a lovely polished deep rim (don't know make.model I'm afraid). The problem is I wasn't planning on slamming it (although I love tht look, just I use it daily & transport kids etc. in it - needs to be practical) - will it look pony riding at standard gti height?

Am I going to have to lower it to stop it looking poo?

Anyone got a pic of an unlowered Gti ride height Mk.3 on 17's?

sorry, no pic but it will look a slightly 4x4 if you dont drop it a bit. use Eibach springs (-35mm) and standard shocks. It'll keep the cost down but the ride quality will be pretty much the same so you won't shake the kids to death in the back.

No piccys here either, but, if you get the rolling ratio correct it will look like yours but with less tyre and more wheel on view if that makes sense.  So, if you think it looks a bit 4x4ish now it will with 17's on it.  I personally would stick with 15's or, at most 16's, to keep the ride quality.  I'm sure there are others on here that will be very quick to counter this, but think about it, VW went to 16 inches max on the Mk3 and their Research and Development department would of spent a hell of a lot of hours trying out different wheel sizes and widths etc.  I know who I would rather trust.....

hi, 17s do look sweet imo, but, they can make the ride v' harsh. i run 16s and i find it fine, it does depend on your suspension set up though.
if you are happy to spend a bit of cash why not get a sus' kit with adjustable height platforms then you can suit yer self.
i saw in this months Golf+ adjustable height and damping kit for £500, cant comment on the quality though.
ultimately you need to like it not anyone else

Yes it is a bit harsh, one reson I havent lowered it coz with the hard ride now its gonna be 10 times worse lowered and stiffened.

I've got a GL so mine was even higher on 17s than yours would be. Id recommend doing it all in one go as might still look a bit on the high side and id also go for Eibach springs(£95) which maintain ride comfort. As an affordable alternative could fit springs and 16s off a mk4 so its more comfortable with a higher tyre wall and without looking like a 4x4.

ive also got 17's on a mk3 8v, and personally i think it looks ok, im in the process of lowering it which is gonna finish off the look, dont be shy to go large

mines on 17s and its been lowered on bilsteins,which was a result i only found out when changing the wheels,bonus!!hope this helps
