No power too Coil

Hi, had a similar thing on my mk2 when i first got it, had two wires coming form the dizi pack in to dash area looked into it the guy who had before me had it wired up to the fog lamps  or an extra foglamp switch! Job was a good one too, had no power up to coil or amp until I shorted wires together been great since now got an alarm to do the same job but with a bit more control
this may not help but thought i'd share it just to be sure

I rang the main stealer up today,the main guy for parts at my local dealers says that the Ignition module is on the same unit as the Transfer something or other ,the price for unit is around £80  ,he says the Mk2 had a seperate Ignition module,Mk3 has a combined unit.

Think im going to have a chat with a local Vw specialist since its not worth changing the complete unit when i cant be 100% sure it is that,was worth a shot for the mentioned 20 quid module.

Hopefully he can help me out with not too much cash involed,i think i might invest in a Bently manual for future problems...

Crossed wires i think  ,ive been reading all over the place and getting myself mixed up i think  ,right i know where we both are now...

Will give it a try asap,will post back and let you know how i get on,then if it fails i guess its time to pay out some labour charges to get her sorted.

Damn,

Just read through the thread on changing the Ig Switch,and noticed a guy saying he lost signal/feed to the stereo then a short time after his car failed to start.

Why did i not "click" when reading that before...When i got my car the stereo was not working,thought it must be a fuse,but it had lost its live...wired a permenant live up,then a few days later my baby has failed to start.

This is looking very promising,thanks Nitro fingers crossed i should be motoring again

When changing the Ignition switch,will i need to mess around getting things reprogrammed?,Nitro did you have an alarm/immob present on your car?.

I believe i got a factory alarm and immobiliser fitted as its all seems to lead off into the ?lume,theres some mention of the key needing too match the ignition so that a signal can be sent to the Ecu,will this mean i might things worse changing the switch?,im getting abit wurried here

nah, you shouldnt need to do any of that reprogramming shi@. my factory alarm/imm' is disabled so didnt affect me. but its the switch insert that you want, not the actual lock part i think the number is 6NO 905 865, thats for my Mk3 '92 2E 8V anyway.
the complication in the removal of this fecker is that you are supposed to strip the steering column to do the job. because a 10mm x 3mm self tapping screw holds in the part, and you cant get to this unless you strip the column stalks etc. fecking pain.
have a look at it and see how ya feel about the drill method, or i have heard of people just breaking the old one out. the idea with drilling is to drill through the small plastic tab that the screw uses to retain the part, you will see this when you get the new bit, it will all fall into place

Well fitted the Ignition switch today and guess what yep you guessed it no change ,think im gonna need to get the factory alarm removed.

I just ordered a Chiltons manual for my car as it covers my car and also cars above it,im hoping to get a detailed wiring diagram so i can pull the factory alarm/immob myself otherwise a trip to a well trained alarm fitter to get it pulled and a new alarm fitted

feck...  i am real sorry it didnt work, it sounded like the problem 
it looks like its goin ta be one of those sloggin it out problems.
just dont loose heart, be extra methodical (make sure you dont miss out anything), dont jump to conclusions and think of the satisfaction when you get it fixed.

little update for you

I managed to get her started yesterday after trying various ways to get around the alarm and immob,got the alarm figured out and disabled and it still wouldn't start,then managed to trick the immobiliser and hey presto she fired up...

Once started it sounded very rough,thought it must be the fact i sprayed loads of carb cleaner down the throttle body and so on to solve the stalling and low idle at junctions... but it didn't pass and i noticed a strange tappet style noise ,i had a listen further down the engine and noticed it coming from the dizzy,so changed the dizzy cap and rotor and now its as sweet as a nut and cleaning the throttle body out has worked a treat no low idle or or stalling attempts for me

I know i said the new Ignition switch didn't work and that's true,but it has solved a little problem,i believed the switch would help as ive lost the live to the stereo and i believe thats a tell tale sign of an faulty Ignition Switch(as i read somewhere),i had also lost feed to the roof(which is in the same area of lume).

So Nitro the b33r's are def0 on me

For future reference to people with alarm and immob troubles i'd have a read and a good search on the VW section of this site for more understanding and tricks around the factory systems seemed to help me might be of use to someone else-: http://www.automotiveforums.com

i hope you get it sorted without too much hassle, the drill method did work fine for me, and it is still ok ;-} you just need to take a bit of time lining up the drill, there isnt much to damage if you get it a bit wrong, good luck.

I think my Ignition switch on my MK3 1.4 CL is up for renewal - getting the same symptoms of no 12v to radio and occasionally failing to start.. 

nitro - how much of the dash around the steering wheel do you have to remove to get to the place where you drill? and are there any fittings like screws i need to replace, or can you use the existing ones?
