No power too Coil

Hi,

New here,great site and have been reading for hours ,I bought my 98' 2.0 Cab coming on for 2 weeks ago now.

When i viewed the Golf it was running real bad,i put a set of new plugs in and patched the well known knackered breather pipe,then it seemed almost perfect,i replaced the offending breather pipe and cleaned the attaching areas ,thought all will be fine,then in the following days after pipe being fitted,i was having the low revs and dieing at junctions and when dipping the clutch,hence me coming across this site

After reading i thought no problems,ill go out this morning and get some carb cleaner and clean out the throttle body,but the car wouldn't start ,i checked for fuel on the plugs(they were wet),then checked for a spark,no spark at the plugs.

It seems there is no power coming to the Coil(checked with volt meter),so i think the Coil maybe fine,im starting to think the Immobiliser has decided to kick in,i removed the battery power,Damn bad move no i get the inicators flashing allround as if the alarm has activated,but with no siren

I have only one key and no key for the alarm overide?,i have replaced the Ecu relay no30 i believe,the fuel pump seems to be working fine when ignition is switched,had it Vag-Com'd some days before it dieing on me this morning,2 faults came up temp sender and Mass air flow.

Temp sender has been replaced,im putting the mass air flow down to the sh** that was in the TB,i need to find out someway of either
by-passing the alarm and immob,rang up Main stealer they are not willing to help me out on the wiring diagram front,i guess they want some labour out of me

Im gutted ive got a 85 Mk1 Gti Cab with like 160k on it and its never let me down(but had its faults),this mk3 thing had got 70k on it and im having a right nightmare,thought the mk3 was a good wise decision to get as a family car and for comfort value

Sorry for the silly long post,i have read as much as my head can take i need help,i have searched high and low for some way of getting round the immob hoping this is my problem,i think one user(golf-vr6) on here has had the same trouble and a fellow forum member(not active i believe) done some sort of  by-pass wiring.

It sound to me like you need to replace the Mass air flow meter.  Or maybe the coil has packed up!!!!!    Both aint cheap unfortunatly.  It might be best to got an auto lecky to have a look before you spend any more dosh on parts though mate.

Thanks for the reply,i believe the Coil could possibly be fine,untill i can get power to it,i cant be sure its dead.

for the mass air flow spoiradic? fault,i believe that could be a number of things,not just the air flow meter,will find that out in time ,just the car was fine accept the low revs at junctions when dipping the clutch or light braking,then i come to start it yesterday morning and nothing ,just turns over with fuel getting to the plugs and no spark.

I think someone mentioned the factory alarm/immobiliser should cut fuel and spark?,also i belive it to be factory as i think they started fitting them on 98 and onwards models?,all this im not 100% sure on,ive just read most of it on my quest...

I'm hoping the immobiliser has caused this and is just cutting the power to the Coil,then to add to my stress i have the silent alarm going off when i connect the battery back up

have you tried the ignition switch, this is a common fault and can cause some strange symptoms.
mine was faulty when i went to buy  my car, started occasionally, then dead then only stage 2 ignition but no starting etc etc. i did post a method of changing the switch without removing the steering wheel somewhere if that helps.

Thanks for pointing that out to me,i hadn't thought of that to be honest,was kinda hoping it was the alarm/immob cutting the power.

I see on a thread you replied saying you managed to use a drill to get round taking the steering wheel off and so on,was this easy enough?,thanks for your help man,think ill head in that direction and hope for the best

have u got no power at coil , or out of dizzy lead , mine was same last week a new rotor arm and dizzy cap from gsf for a tenner sorted , pull lead off dizzy that comes from coil and check for spark there .

Hey there,

There is no power in the feed/plug too the Coil,so therefore im losing spark before the leads

Think im going to get a Ignition unit from the sealers Monday,i did try yesterday,but the parts guy had gone early

If that doesn't work then ill be tackling the factory alarm/immob

Still unsure on how to remove and refit the Ignition unit,i think ill try the easiest way first(drill) if that looks abit hairy ill be getting stuck into removing the Column

i hope you get it sorted without too much hassle, the drill method did work fine for me, and it is still ok ;-} you just need to take a bit of time lining up the drill, there isnt much to damage if you get it a bit wrong, good luck.

Hi, had a similar thing on my mk2 when i first got it, had two wires coming form the dizi pack in to dash area looked into it the guy who had before me had it wired up to the fog lamps  or an extra foglamp switch! Job was a good one too, had no power up to coil or amp until I shorted wires together been great since now got an alarm to do the same job but with a bit more control
this may not help but thought i'd share it just to be sure
