Mk2 Golf GTI 1989 16valve Starting problems
« on: 07 March 2006, 19:03 »
I recently had my clocks out and everything went wrong, when it started it would cut out within 5 Min's, i fort this was the alternator as the battery light stayed on and thats a sign of a faulty alternator so i replaced it with a reconditioned one. I've tried junks leads and it wont even start now, its trying but it wont fire up.  its not the battery as i've had it tested and its fine, can any1 help me as i would be very grateful or reccommend any1 who could fix this

Sounds like a plug is not connected properly on the clockset I'd take tham out and check them or try a cheap replacement from ebay?

If the blue wire from the alternator to the clocks is broken the alternator wont charge the battery, and the warning light will be on constantly.  Check the wires to the clock plugs to make sure they are all connected properly.

Silly question but did you refit the rubber hose into the back of the clocks? It shouldn't stop it starting but it wouldn't help it.

yes i have connected the vaccum pipe back and the mfa is working properly, i cant understand why it wont start now and it did b4 because i've not driven it any where, i've made sure the plugs are connected properly, i've had all spark plugs out to clean them and it still wont start, it can't be anything mechanical surely as the engine was fine before i messed around with the clocks.

Is the starter motor turning at all? If the starter's turning but the engine won't fire, check you put the plugs back in the right order. If the starter won't turn, try another battery
