Whats this hose?
« on: 06 March 2006, 11:48 »
I replaced the throttle body on my GTI 8v (AGG code) at the weekend in an attempt to cure its stalling problem.

Fingers crossed, so far this seems to have worked and it has not stalled since it was replaced

Something I did notice when I was taking all the various hoses off the throttle body was that one of them was completely clogged up with gunk which didnt look too healthy

The pipe actually feeds off the main air intake pipe that comes from the airbox towards the top by the throttle body, it then goes underneath a black plastic cover on top of the engine block (this cover is held on by 2 screws) and then goes down towards the bottom of the engine where it stops.

Might be a really bad description but I am not particularly mechanically minded so this is the best I can do

If anyone can identify what this hose is from the description I would appreciate some advice on whether this pipe should be full of cr*p (i assume not though), what it does, whether it is easy to replace and even possibly why it would get full up in the first place ie is there something wrong elsewhere?

Any help appreciated

that's the oil breather... it should have some oil residue in there but not "full of gunk".

Clean it out, then see how dirty it gets after a short while. It might just be many years worth of oil clogging it up...

Hi Dom

How do i go about taking this off? As I unscrewed the two bolts described but it didnt seem to want to come away from the top of the engine without a reasonable amount of force.

Is it ok just to use brut force to get the hose off or am I likely to do some damage?

Cheers

have you got a photo of the engine bay? just reread your post and noticed you said it went to the bottom of the engine...

Thanks monkeyalan I was searching for a decent photo but had no joy

I have arrowed the parts which I was trying to explain earlier so hopefully this will now be more clear

The top arrow is pointing at the start of the hose where it joins the main intake pipe

The middle arrow is pointing to where this hose goes into the top of the engine underneath the plastic cover which I have tried to undo and remove

And the bottom arrow is pointing to this same hose which is now going to the btoom of the engine (which cannot be seen)

It looks as though this pipe is one continuous line so I would assume it would all need to be cleaned or maybe even replaced

Let me know if you have issues seeing the photo as I havent posted any before!!!

I did this on myne after I got it - just gently pull the end off the cam cover (it's like a 2 - into - 1 effort). The other end if Veedub's own hose clip nonsense - just break it open and use a normal hose clip in it's place.

Easy mate...

Sounds easy enough then ill give it another try

Should the plastic cover on the top of the engine which covers where the 2 hoses join come off on its own or is this attached to the pipes somehow as it definately didnt want to budge after I removed the 2 bolts

I must be missing something so ill give it another go and let you knwo how I get on

Thanks for your help
