m4nesh. hello mate there are two bypass valves . one metal and one plastic . i was a bit sceptical about fitting new valves . would they work ? can i do it myself ? the ansewers are yes in both cases . its worth the ? 28.00 if not you could try a scrap yard and get second hand ones but thats a bit risky whos to say they arent knackerd! good luck mate.

When you filled it up with coolant did you squeeze the radiator pipes to pump the coolant around the system?

Yep I did that, what i did was release the bottom radiator pipe, then the top radiator pipe and flush it with a running hose pipe. Then I got the pipe connected to the cylinder head and by pass valve and drained that and flushed it with a hose up through the by pass valve. Squeezed the pipes and then hey presto 2 litres gone somewhere?

You need to take off the bottom radiator hose, and the bypass hose on the thermostat housing.

Run the engine up to temperature and put the setting on the heater to hot. now carefully touch the heater matrix feed pipes that are passenger side bulkhead and you should have heat on both of them. If you dont and I am pretty sure by what your saying you wont then the heater matrix is blocked up and needs reverse flushing.

I have just done that and the hose going into the bulkhead from the bypass valve is hot and the other hose is cold(luke warm)...

So my question is how do you reverse flush the matrix?  Do i pull cold pipe out and flush it with a running hose?

oh yeah and how much coolant mix? whats coolant systems capacity?

What you want to do is remember which one is cold as this is the feed out of the matrix as the hot is getting to it. remove both pipes and push the end of the hose pipe into the pipe which was cold. Turn the hose on and hopefully you should get a lot of rusty mess coming out. keep it going till you get clear water coming out.

My haynes says 6.3 litres capacity but I'll double check later with my bentley manual which is downstairs.

I have just done what you have said, firstly, the bypass valve hose flushed that with hose then the other hose from the bulkhead got the hose and with a hose clip on flushed it the other way, used some real force to get water to come out the other way. However, did everything as normal run engine with water lid off till fan kicks in....but still no joy with heater.

One thing i did notice was that the hose going into the bypass pass was hot but the hose coming out of the bypass valve was cooler(Not same hotness)? Which only leaves me to conclude that i need a new bypass valve.....

I put in rougly 4.5 litres of juice....2 parts coolant 2.5 parts water is this ok?

Is there a heat control switch within the matrix or something?

Sounds like your bypass valve.
The heater matrix is simply a heat exchanger and nothing else, no control's or switches associated with it.

I have got the same problem as you m4nesh but I managed to get less coolant in than you did. The VW user manual also says we get about 6.3litres in.
