what should I do?
« on: 10 February 2006, 10:10 »
The gearbox on my current car (Mk4 Polo) is dying, leaking oil, jumping out of 5th gear, etc. So it needs to be replaced. But that will be expensive.
The clutch also needs doing, so it might as well be done at the same time.

I spoke to one place here in London that said it would cost over a grand for them do replace the gearbox with a genuine new VW part and do the clutch at the same time.
Another place I spoke to said it would cost about £1000 plus VAT for labour and parts, fitting a reconditioned box (that would cost £550 on it's own).
I spoke to a guy at the local Mr Clutch service centre, and he quoted me £670 for fitting and supplying brand new clutch and re-con gearbox (With 12month/12k mile guarantee).

But the final option would be to buy a used gearbox (about £150-200), get a clutch, then get a garage to fit them, was quoted £180+vat for the labour.

I want the best value for money, a gearbox that won't die after a year and the least hassle.

What do you think?

Hmm, not the most exciting thing to have to spend your money on  :undecided:

Personally I wouldn't go for the used gearbox option as you don't really know where you are with that.

The quick and easy option would be the recon gearbox and new clutch. If you have more time and can be without your car for a while you could look at getting your existing one rebuilt.

There's also the slightly tempting option of ditching the car for a few hundred, then spending the money that would have gone on the repair on a nice Mk2 8v GTI.
But I need to be practical. :(

Forget the 2nd hand box.

1) Exhange your box for a recon box, should be about £500 tops, a bit more with clutch. Don't bother with oem, not worth it. Most exchange boxes will give you 1 year warranty anyway.

2) Sell and buy a GTI !

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

Take it to a car auction.......

Receive decent money, buy new car.

Feel a little bit guilty for the new owner....

Well, unfortunately, I still have a learner wife to insure on it, so I don't think I can really change to a GTI just yet.
But if I get the gearbox and clutch done, the car will at least be worth something when I come to sell it.
And if I give it a little while longer, I'll have more no-claims anyway.

Dying to get back into a GTI though. Found some picture of my old Mk2 16v yesterday, boy to I miss it, small bumper, chip spoiler, bottle top alloys...............

Wife wants something modern with power steering, so I'll be after a late Mk2, big bumpers, PAS and 5 doors, what's not practical about that ?
