The gearbox on my current car (Mk4 Polo) is dying, leaking oil, jumping out of 5th gear, etc. So it needs to be replaced. But that will be expensive.
The clutch also needs doing, so it might as well be done at the same time.
I spoke to one place here in London that said it would cost over a grand for them do replace the gearbox with a genuine new VW part and do the clutch at the same time.
Another place I spoke to said it would cost about £1000 plus VAT for labour and parts, fitting a reconditioned box (that would cost £550 on it's own).
I spoke to a guy at the local Mr Clutch service centre, and he quoted me £670 for fitting and supplying brand new clutch and re-con gearbox (With 12month/12k mile guarantee).
But the final option would be to buy a used gearbox (about £150-200), get a clutch, then get a garage to fit them, was quoted £180+vat for the labour.
I want the best value for money, a gearbox that won't die after a year and the least hassle.
What do you think?
