Service time

Its that time again  :cry:, Service time!

Currently got 52k on the clock of a 1998 1.8t, got full dealer history to now and its only done 4k since the last service 12 months ago.

Anyone know what im going to need doing at this interval or is it just a simple oil/plugs service. Cost?

they will inspect the cambelt due to your cars age, despite the low miles it may need replacing anyway. if they do that all the idler/tensioner pulleys should be changed too.

and possibly the water pump if you want to save some money at a later date

Basically, its that difficult mileage where nothing has been replaced and you will be looking at brake pads / disks / maybe cambelts etc. All of which could cost a fortune at VW

It depends on whether your last service was a basic annual service or an 'extra work' one. SOmetimes you 'need' brake fluid, air filter, fuel filer, plugs etc changing...

To be honest, I'd leave it for a while if I were you. You have only done 4k since the last service, the 12 month thing is a load of rubbish - designed to line the pockets of dealers. When you sell the car, only a very very very picky buyer would pick up on this,,, and 1.8t's are worth so little (as I am finding out) it will nowhere near cover the cost of extra servicing.

I would wait until you are nearer 10K since your last service, if your mileage remains really low, then maybe sooner.

The benefit of having a 12 month service (even if mileage is really low) is that they may identify something about to fail that saves money in the long run - i.e. damaged CV gaiters etc. However, that would be picked up on the MOT

AND, remember that many new cars are 2 year / 20K now anyway... So that blows the 12 month argument to sh!t!

Thanks for that, il put the meeting with the bank manager on hold for a while then!  :grin:

Sailed through the MOT so all being well, ive got a bit of time to play with regarding a service
