Hi Lee Ive had 2 mk4 GTi's.

One was a Gti 2.0i and was a lovely car with leather and all but i found it very thirsty and not very quick. Id had a 206xsi before it and for me the Golf wasnt much quicker, top end yeah but not off the mark. I suppose it was a heavier car tho. But it was a Y-reg with only 22,000m on the clock.........So I thought if im paying GTi insurance then I want something thats gonna be quick. So I sold it for a good price and bought a 02 Civic Type R, now that was phenomenal! But I sold that after a while...........Anyway after a few more cars I was planning to buy a TDi as everyone raves about them. But I was on ebay and saw a GTi Turbo 180 which I couldnt resist! Ive had that about 2 months and to be fair its awesome. Lovely ride and superb power, off the mark and up top! But it goes through the petrol like u dont wanna know, and the way I drive it was getting about 300-330miles per tank and did about 28/29mpg overall, which for me is sh*t! But if you want a really powerful car thats the consequence!  No matter how slow I drove I couldnt get more than about 32mpg.

The petrol situation was doing my head in so I decided to sell it, I still own it untill Monday when the bloke comes to get it. Now Im after a TDi. They are supposed to be awesome with good power too. You can always chip them for extra power but the economy side is whats appealing to me. Problem is they hold their value and many of them are high mileage. So your gonna be paying more if you get a diesel but long term it will be better off!

Anyway that is my honest opinion! Good luck choosing, Im sure the other peeps on here will add their thoughts! Later buddy...............

how do mate

I've just picked up a GT TDI 130 and all i can say is.......... WOW!!!! Filled up the tank yesterday and i've done about 100 miles since. The gauge hasn't left the full mark yet!! I've given it plenty of stick too!!

I've not driven a petrol GTI so can't offer an opinion on them.  You're best bet is to test drive both and see what you like.  I went for the diesel cos i wanted a cheaper car to run in the long term and be able to have a bit of fun without worrying about where the fuel has gone!!

We have an Audi a4 tdi (110) same engine as golf mk4 110 and a 01 150 1.8t

I used to think the 110 tdi was really impressive whilst I had a 2 litre Golf. Now have a 1.8t 150 Golf and the TDI seems very lethargic in comparison. It has impressive mid range grunt, but nowhere near as much fun to drive quickly as the petrol. Suffers from a lack of immediate throttle response, which makes it rubbish if you like to 'press on' down country lanes and balance the car on the throttle.

Having said that, if you simply 'cruise' around, the TDI is very accomplished, especially on the motorway.. The 130 and 150 are far more flexible than the 110. The 110 struggles to pull from low revs in 5th which means in a 30 you need to be in 4th, then sometimes change down to 3rd to gain any momentum.

Our 110 never delivers less than 50 mpg on the fuel computer - since new and over 73000 miles our average is 54mpg. The Golf isn't bad, in the summer it averages 37ish and 34ish in the winter (cold start seems to really hamper it) - but i reckon I drive it a bit harder than the Audi.

Also bear in mind that only the GT TDI 150 came with sports suspension as standard. The GTI Turbo isn't exactly the most composed / well damped hatch around, so with 'comfort susp' it must be even more wallowy on challenging roads.

TDis seem to be much more expensive than GTi turbo, so this will offset any fuel savings - althought the diesel will still be worth more when you sell it. Just for info, we had no engine problems with the 1.8t, had lots of niggly (but expensive) things go wrong with the Audi.

Both are good cars, but neither are great driving machines as standard.
