Component/ Coax ???
« on: 26 January 2006, 10:35 »
Sorry firstly.
I am an audio virgin, we all have to start somewhere!
What is the difference between coax and component. If I buy coaxial speakers for my 1990 mk2 will i have to change wiring connections etc and if so , what do you have to do
Kind regards

Coaxes are one little (trebley) speaker inside the bigger (bassier) speaker. They occupy the same size as the OEM (original) speakers and will give better performance. Naturally, th elittle one kinda gets in the way of the bigger one, so the next step is to move the trebley one outside the box, so to speak. That's component. Normally, you'll have your trebley ones pointing at yer lugholes, so they'll be higher up, too.

To connect 2 speaker drivers (either coax or component) you need something called a 'crossover'. They're often built in to the coax type speakers, and often seperate bits when you buy component speakers.

So, get coaxial ones and you'll not have to bodge anything (provided they're the same size of course!), get components and you'll probably have to fiddle more.

componets give you better control over your system as you can move the tweeters around and experiment with different positions. they can generally handle more power than coaxials.

some xovers have adjustment on them too for further control over the sound.

components sometimes are 3 way giving you a large and medium speaker aswell as your little 1in tweeter :)

Thanks guys.
I am a bit of an old buffer so I only want to upgrade the standard speakers. I have already replaced the dash speakers with Jbl GTo speakers. These are 2-way so I presume that they are coaxial?
Should I just upgrade the door speaker with better coaxials too?

Also, the car does not have any rear speakers, will there be wiring or will this have to be done.?

Alan

components do sound better but then you would ideally want an amp to run them.
so unless you want an install in your car it might just be easier to stick with coax speakers:)

also go to your local ice retailer and listen to the speakers before you buy any as they all sound different that way you can match some to waht you like:)

if you're not really bothered about a super sounding setup then go for coaxials. they're cheaper and easier to install.

In a mk2 there should be wires run which goto 4x6" speakers in the parcel shelf supports.

Hello Guys and thank you.

However, i have one last question. There are no speakers at rear of the car ..is the wiring still likely to be hiding somewhere?
