rear arches

got some work done to the car yesterday and noticed that on both rear arches the inner ones are rusted and will need to fabricate new ones. has anyone experienced this and is it time consuming?
i know that rear arches alone can be bought from vw at relatively cheap prices and welded on but as for the inners what do i do?

when i found my inner arch round the fuel flap was badly rotten (i put my hand thru it!) on my old 16v.  i promptly patched it with biscuit tin/grip fill and a load of underseal then sold it

if its badly rotten then it will cost an arm & a leg to fix

Note to self.......never buy a car from gambit!!!

Would it be possible to remove the inner arch from another car at a scrappy if they're not available/too expensive new???

again its just a pig of a job because of the rear strut towers etc. im not sure if you can even buy new inner rear arches

if you ever go to buy a mk2, hand up & under the rear driverside arch around fuel flap & give it a good & prod ;)

the only place it seems to be rotten is when it joins the outer arch which i will be replacing and it is quite easy to access?!

you should remove the rear door card and drop the seat and that'll give you a better idea of the rust

I had a lot of rot on the nearside in this area due to acident damage, my neighbour repaired it for me as i wouldnt trust myself to do it. bug job but if you know what you are doing well worth it if the rest of the car is clean. I went to the scrappy and cut a mint panel and as much of the inner arch as i could get and he slid it over the rotten panel, well ground off rust first of course, hope this helps  :smiley:
i must buy a new car!
