« on: 07 January 2006, 21:31 »
any one know what size radiator I need for a 1990 16v??? I've been told by GSF that it is there part number 17333, this describes as for the 1.6 carb model (size 430 mm) on there website  - is this right???

surely it must be a different from a 1.6 carb model???

cheers

yes the 16v rad is physically the same size, as a 1.6 rad, but is double cored :)  The 1.6 rad isn't going to be up to the job, but a few 16v owners fit a 1.8 GTI/Carb rad instead and report lower temps.  You'll need the upper & lower rad hoses too as well as the fan shroud. While you're there I would also upgrade to a 2 speed fan, you need the fan, the temp sender in the bottom of the rad and the loom from the 2 pin connector on the RHS of the radiator.  It just swaps over :)

my head is done in!!!  :undecided:

I've no idea what Im doing now!!!
I'm not going to bother with the 2 speed fan, can see it making much difference!
I might be tempted by a 8v rad though:

what about these:

then I can get the hose from GSF, £10 or each???

Those 2 auctions contain everything you need to upgrade to a 2 speed fan, notice the loom still attached to the fan

Hoses can indeed be bought from GSF, but since they are so common I'd have a look in a scrappy, or even ask the guy selling those bits nicely to include them ;)

I brought a rad from gsf last week and had to file one of the holes out slightly as the mounts were out by about 1/4 inch. It was the correct rad with the corect part number ect. It works ok though.........

well here goes, going for the 8v rad and fan, I do hope they fit and I don't need to make any major mods to get it in!!!

Just need the top and bottom hoses now - anyone got them???

Right I've got my 8v rad (525mm) fan, shroud, and 8v top and bottom hoses hopefully arriving this weekend ready for there install this weekend.

Next question:
Whats the best antifreeze to use, and what ratio should I mix it with water? How much antifreeze/water does the 16v take?? Oil temp currently runs between 102 and on the odd occasion 124! I'd like this reduced if poss!

Is it worth flushing the system first?

How do I ensure there is no air in the system?

Cheers

Genuine G12+ coolant from VW, or febi G12 coolant from http://www.vwspares.co.uk.

I usually go for a ratio of roughly 50/50, and if empty the 16v will take just over 5 litres :)

Its definitly worth flushing the system before you refil, you don't want any crud in the new rad ;)
