Emmisions Urgent help
« on: 05 January 2006, 11:37 »
My driver has failed its MOT on emmisions, so im not very happy

its  1.6 with single weber, piper cam and full system exhaust, and the problem is that it stinks of petrol at the exhaust, so its not burning it all

it doesnt missfire so im not sure what it could be.  I don't think its overfueling, but i will have a look today

would getting the timming sorted out help? as when i fit the cam, i timmed the dizzy cap from sound, and not the proper way,

so other than the timming and the carb is there anything else that would help the unburnt fuel?

cheers Tom

Sounds like you already know the answer to me. Take it to a garage and get them to set the timing correctly and set up the carb. Should do the trick.

well, just took it to a local vw garage, said it would be 30quid to time it up from the dizzy,

turns out it was 3 notches out on the cam, and 14degrees on the dizzy, which he still did all for 30quid, so cant say fairer than that,

runs a lot better now, just gonna set up the carb.

would a piper cam cause a smell of petrol as its lumpy on tickover?  its an ultimate road one 285?

yeah i think it is running to rich, tried adjusting the mixture screw only thing is, is that it is fulyl tightened one way,

so i can only adjust it one way, which i think is the richening way, when i turn it and keep turning it the car doesnt cut out, just makes a different noise, so i really cant tell if im richening it or making it lean

http://www.msummerfield.plus.com/225064/Weber_32%5c34_dmtl_instructions.pdf

these are what i found, just doesnt make sence as when i do what it says on page 3, it says engine speed should increase etc, but it just makes a different noise from the carb??

long-ish shot...have you asked the garage where your having the MOT done if they can set it up for you? they have the equipment to test it so must be able to set them up using the same stuff...
08.03.10 - 3, maybe 4 weeks, and I want my golf back on the road!

well that makes it dead easy to put it back how it was after fiddling with the screw, basically you keep turning it till the engine starts to run rough then back off a little, this will get you close :)

Ideally you want a CO meter, I got a digital one off ebay for about £35
