Just one more question (i think!!)... when would you expect to find the small and big bumper models?? Were they fitted on particular years or was it just an option on all models??

Ok the GTI had small bumpers up to 89, but it isn't unusual to see early 90 reged models with small bumpers as some wern't registered until late.  The big bumpers were then fitted to GTIs from 90 'G' onwards :)

The lower spec models all got small bumpers regardless of the year, except the GL which had big bumpers as the GTI models, but with chunky side trim and no arches.

If you want rare as rocking horse do do then get looking for a MkII Limited! Its a 16v motor with a supercharger bolted on.

Or even a mkII golf ranger! lol  Which is a 4x4 land rover styled mk2.

But for the money you have to spend why not look for a rally?

I've love to consider the G60 or even a mk3 VR6 highline... but the insurance would kill me. I'm only 23 and will have 3yrs no claims when i come to buy.

Hey Andy have you had a quote mate on a vr6 as my brother had one when he was 23 and it was under a grand with Adrian Flux. And has any one got pictures of the limited or the ranger never knew they existed must be rare...

a g60 limited looks like the most standard golf you can imagine apart from it having a blue trim round the grill and a blue badge on the grill. they were all 5 door and only 71 were made, designed to be a proper street sleeper. there is a register of who owns them somewhere on line so google "g60 limited" and like ben said they were supercharged 16v, putting out 210 bhp from the factory whcih is pretty feckin impressive for 15 years ago!
the golf "country" (not ranger) is ugly as sin but at the same time is pretty cool. its like a dodgy mish mash of golf and land rover.

WOW... what an amazing car. I've always been a big fan of the sleeper thing, and this car really does sound perfect!! However, chances are with the initial outlay and even more pricey insurance i doubt i'd be able to afford such a beast. But i'll have a scout around anyway!!

Many thanks for the links too!!

Hmmm, none for sale anywhere!! Not that i'm surprised, i just wanted to get an idea of how much they sell for??
My guess is around £8K give or take a couple... but i might be completely wrong. Either way, it's out of my price range but definately a thought for the future.

a girl who used to be on here alot had one... in fact so did her husband!! imagine that 2 limiteds!! anyway she had offers well over £10k that she turned down before getting an offer she couldn't refuse. if you do somehow get one, bear in mind that parts for these are like rocking horse sh!t! i remember claire had a split coolant hose and could she find one?! it seems as they were a 'special' project they didn't realy make spare parts for them. if you do want one then your best bet is to search germany as thats where they were all initially sold and where most of them now live.
