mk2 GTi model range differences
« on: 28 December 2005, 21:47 »
Evenin' guys. I'm new here and am seriously considering leaving my trusty Nissan and swapping her for a mk2 GTi 16v earlier feb/march time.

As i'll be in absolutely no rush to buy one, i'm more than happy to hold out for the right motor. So far, all i've concluded is that it must be a mint, low-miler, 3dr, completely standard and on either a J or K plate. Before you say it, i know this is probably extremely rare, but like i say... i'm in no rush, and have made the mistake in the past of impulse buying and getting something which i wasn't completely happy with. My plan is to find myself a very rare car, which i will keep standard and in tip top shape.

I've been trawling the net (most of the day!!), but still need to know a few things...

I only buy 'top-spec' cars with ALL the extras etc., and would like to know which bits i should expect to find?? ie. clear rear lights, GTi carpets, electric windows, rainbow interior etc.

Was leather offered on any of the mk2 GTi range??

Where do the electric Recaro seats come from??

What are the rarest colours, and were any built in limited numbers??

I apologise is these questions have been asked before, but i couldn't find anything appropriate using the 'search' facility.

Many thanks in advance. Andy.

Hello mate have you seen the fire and ice models they are rare but not to every ones taste as they were a bit in your face have a look on the search thing and make up your own mind. Finding a well looked after golf is not as hard as you would think just as long as you have the cash. I payed £1400 for my motor its a daily driver in good condition not mint but very good and its got a good spec and service history. I went to look at 2 others that were both £1200 and they were aptsolute nails..........

hey andy, welcome to the forum...

late mk2 16v that you mention are often refered to as 'run-out' models. these all have smoked rear lights, pas, elec windows, central locking, etc and generally the rainbow interior.

leather was always there as a very expensive option

elec recaro's mainly come from imported lhd g60's but were also an option at various times

rare colours? depends what you mean by rare. oak green is the 'classic' colour and affects values a lot. silver is a surprisingly 'rare' mk2 colour. depends how geek you want to get - porsche nile green is my idea of rare

In response to Bulk66's reply, i'm really trying to spend about £2K... but i know i'll end up nearer the £3K mark.

Royal blue & bright blue metalic are pretty rare colours (just try finding panels for one!)  Compared to oak green which is relativly comon in comparison.

You'll be hard pressed to find a standard 'top spec' MK2 in the UK, we are mostly too tight to order all the extras   Most of the bits can be found on ebay/in the classifieds and added yourself though, your best bet is to get one with good bodywork and work from there :)

A full specced MK2 would include these standard extras:
Top tint rear lights (standard on most 16v models and run out 8vs)
Roof aerial (Bee sting, again standard on most 16v models and run out 8vs)
Central locking
Green tint glass (or even chromlux if buying a Golf limited or Rallye/G60)
Power Steering (the 16v had a slightly more 'sporty' rack apparently)
Electric windows
Electric heated mirrors
Fischer 6 Cd holder for the std centre console
Leather steering wheel
Headlight washers (v. rare)
Votex centre console (v. v. rare)
Electric heated Recaros (v. v. v. rare)
Air conditioning (v. v. v. v. rare)
Electric adjust headlight range (v. v. v. v. v. rare)

Have I forgotten anything? ;)

You can also get pop out rear quarters for the 3 door models as an aftermarket accessory, but be prepared to spend a fortune on a set, the green tint ones are especially hard to find!

LOL, okay GTI it is then!!

I know what you mean about overpriced too... i think i'll probably just wait for one to appear as a private sale, and hopefully grab a bargain.
