Strange Noises in the snow
« on: 28 December 2005, 08:34 »
It appears in my car (1.8T) that when ever I spin my wheels in the snow it makes an awful grinding noise. It is doing this every time I slip a little and it really doesn't sound healthy.... I had noticed it before but only on the odd occasion I pushed a little hard out of a junction.

Any one got any ideas what it might be, I thought it might be something like the clutch slipping but it doesn't seem to be coming back through the cluth pedal so I'm not sure

Isn't it just the traction control?

mine does it if the cars skidding when braking the abs kicks in which makes the grating noise so traction control sounds about right to me aswell? :undecided:

See now I would have gone down the traction control route as well but mine is x reg (2000) ARZ which I believe does not have traction control, also I certainly don't have a traction control button.

It does however sound very similar to the horible noises ABS makes in the snow as well although surely it couldn't be ABS as I'm not breaking when it happens.

I thought all turbos had traction control?? It is part of the ESP. DO you have an ESP button? if so, that also turns off the traction control.

If its snowy, you will soon find out if you have TC.

I know the sound you're talking about. I would say it's the traction control aswell. I think it works by applying the brakes to the wheel thats lost grip?? (My Turbo's got the ASC button)

nope I havent got an ASR / ASC / Tracion control / ESP button or anything similar. As I said I don't think models before 2000 had traction control

Does it wheelspin? i would have thought pre 2000 would have had at least traction control.
