1.8 T's can be very economical. You can get over 40 MPG if you drive steadily.

the 1.9 (90bhp) diesel is ridiculously economical. Even in our 110bho Audi Estate (virtually same engine) I struggle to get the long running average below 52mpg.

The old 1.6 was hopeless, I had a 2000 Bora with this engine and it was slow and thirsty - probably the same as the 2.0. The later 1.6 16v from 2001 ish is supposed to be much better. Surprisingly the 1.8t is more economical than the old 1.6 and 2.0. Having owned them all, I'd say the 1.8t is a good compromise between performance / economy. The 130 and 150 diesels are of course very good, but i just prefer the responsiveness of the petrol.

performance wise i raced a GTTDI at santa pod and it whooped me off the line from the pure fact that i has mountains of torque low down. After those low revs it always loses out to a petrol car.

However if i had the disposable income i would without a hesitant thought purchase a mk4 GTTDI as a work horse, they are great cars and from what i hear very reliable. This is coming from a devout mk2 owner btw.

I find that the more powerful diesels (including the new BMW 320d I drove last week) feel very quick until you actually try to drive quick. Hope that makes sense, I mean there is bags of torque in normal driving and they are every bit as good (and often better) than petrol, but i miss going though the gears and changing at 6000 rpm when i am in the mood.

It is also a very stacated drive, boost - whoosh - change gear - wait - boost - woosh - change etc.

Having said all that, you can't argue with the figures and mpg and to be fair, my decision to by a 1.8t was based on the fact that all the sim ilar aged diesels were so so expensive. We have an audi a4 with the same engine (tdi 110) and it is a great tourer, but has been expensive with lots of niggly engine management / cat convertor air sensor probs, which may have eroded our fuel savings.

At the risk of facing the wrath of the 2 litre boys, I would say you can't go far wrong with a 1.8t or tdi in anmy flavour. Just don't think you got a bargain and buy an SDI
