clicking noise?
« on: 06 November 2003, 09:14 »
Hi all

I am from New Zealand, and i own an 85 GTI 8v, from the front of the car, i can hear quite a loud clicking noise every time i go over a bump, its a sharp sounding click and can be heard really well through the inside while driving, i checked out the front suspension/axles and found that the outer cv boots were split, so i bought some new ones, and replaced them killing about 4hours in the process, as it was the first time i have done this.
Anyway, the car still has this clicking sound, i checked the cv joints (outer ones) and they seemed fine, they rotated smoothly, no signs of damage to the balls etc, my suspicions were the inner ones, but when i moved them, they didn't make any strange noises or anything.

What could this noise be? its embarrasing as every time i go over a bump, people turn around and look :-[

Thanks for any help

Yep I had that problem and it took me weeks to find it!

It turned out to be the suspension top mounts.
There was a gap between the suspension and the top mount so when I went over a bump it would go 'click'.

I cured this by putting a metal washer between the suspension and the top mount.

Do this....
Open the hood,
press down on the car and watch the top mounts.
If you hear that noise then try the trick i told you.

Also check your top mounts for any ware/damage because it might be easier to sort them at this stage.

Any other questions let me know :)

I know how embarrasing it is.

I thought people were looking because I have a loud audio system but they were looking because of that noise...lol

i'm sorry free but i don't understand what u said by

"is neything caching on the way bake down mate? "

I was told by the previous owner that the top mounts were replaced, but i'll double check, i'm pretty sure its got something to do with the c.v joints, or maybe the g/box, because i was turning one wheel while the other was on the ground and i could hear this clicking noise coming from the g/box diff area, this happened once, i tryed to show my mate, and when i turned the wheel it didn't make the clicking noise again... very strange, is this common for these cars at around the 130,000 mile mark?

i was quoted about 700NZ$ to get new cv joints, and i figure the cars not worth much more

The diff does sound a bit rough with one wheel off the ground, my guess would be your noise is coming from the ball joint on the wish bone ( where it connects to the hub carrier ). Try jackin up the car and getting a mate to wiggle the road wheel top and bottom while you have a look underneath for any play in the ball joint.

Could be worn engine mounts! Its worth changing them even if its not them.

i don't wanna spend 2 much on the car as its just a run about until i get my new car, so new engine mounts r out of the question.

I shall however checkout the ball joints, and have a good once over to hopefully find out what the F%$@ the noise is

cheers 4 tha help everyone  ;D

Sounds like a stupid question , but did you put plenty of grease in cv joint when putting the new boot on?
