I think you just have false memories about the performance of your 1.6, it sounds perfect to me

Ok - Got home and decided to dig out the Golf manuals and as I suspected the Golf 1600 Driver's Max torque comes in @ 2500 as opposed to 4000 in the 8V GTI.

Hey ho, I suppose you cant have everything.

the 8v i got now doesnt peak at 3500, it peaks about 4800 from the graph i got.  it doesnt seem to run out of steam at all im always hitting that rev limiter it just flys up there and my old one was loosing power from 5000 on wards and by 5500 i was changing gear to get some more poke. only other thing is i can wheel spin it in changes from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and if its wet from 3rd to 4th.  now if only it had some longer gears it be perfect but i guess ill loose that 8v pull then :S

Thats why i think ive got a GTI Cam in my Driver cause it pulls like mad at 4000rpm, and can sit on 8v gti's arses all day long?!
Also got GTI exhaust, and 1.8 Carb setup. (that made loads of difference)!
Bizzare!  :undecided:

thats pretty good going if you can keep up with an 8v in a 1.8 carb, it is down to the driver though in my old 8v i had trouble keeping up with a 1.6 carb straight line i could easily take him but the corners where a no no he was flying round and i was sliding. fielders car had trouble keeping up but slammed's didnt for same car lol i think i could take slammed now though :P suspension on the old was awful but the new ones awesome :D 60mm drop

Makes sense though does it not?? Why put a drivers max torque so high up when it is only a 1600 and not designed to have the balls ragged off it. Gtis are designed to be thrashed.

They are strange beasts these Golfs? My 1990 digifant will not idle but it goes like stink.... what's that all about? It pulls really strongly after about 4k and zips through to the rev limiter without effort...
Just wish it would idle

Mine seems to idle at a low speed even when cold (below 1000 revs). I must admit that I think the Digifant could do with a higher idle speed when cold as it does sound as if it might stall at times.  My old 1600 Driver had had a very high tickover when cold.
