The 8v GTI & 1.6 Driver should both idle at about 900rpm

Yes, that is correct but the driver ticks over at a much higher speed until it gets to temperature. Where as the 8V will always sit at anything from 850 to 900, even when cold.

The driver should only rev to 1.5-2k when first started for a few seconds then settle to an idle of about 900. If not then one of the many carb components isn't working quite right
